Rise & Recline Mechanisms Recliners have developed a range of standard rise/recline chairs along with there more specialised range of bespoke Heavy-duty/Bariatric range without compromising the users dignity regardless of the clients disability problem. It has and continues to be our desire to ensure that our chairs retain a high degree of design from the home environment to ensure that the user retains his/her dignity, privacy and feels comfortable in any of our chairs as they fit easily into the individual’s personal environment. The chairs are widely used throughout the healthcare sector offering assistance and benefits in sitting, reclining and rising to possibly improving circulation and reducing fluid retention. The mechanisms have been designed to ensure that they have independent back & foot movement to enable optimum personal comfort without increasing any further risk to a user. Consideration has to be given to the following - Seat Height, Seat Depth, Back Height, Arm Support and Seat Firmness effect how much we need to alter position and response to how comfortable we are. It is important to match the features of the chair with the physical needs of the user. The inclusion of pressure relief foam, gels and air cushions is that the supporting seat foam should relate to that of the users weight to ensure that the seat support is stable and enabling the pressure relief components to be effective in reducing the risk of pressure sores without compromising the users comfort. Recliners can offer the user a high level of choice and quality, making us one of the leaders in the manufacture of rise/recline chairs for all sizes and weights along with the ability to adapt our chairs to meet unique individual requirements. Seated – It is important that a user is matched to a chair meeting the physical needs of that particular person to provide the correct posture and an even distribution of weight that helps to reduce pressure build-up in isolated areas. Recline – A resting position can be achieved whilst maintaining a good posture and effect the distribution of weight over a larger area. This will allow the user to take a relaxing nap. Rise – The rise facility on the chair will allow the user to be gently lifted into a near standing position without strain being placed on limbs or joints. The user will be able to move away from the chair having obtained a more stable stance without effort. Frames All our wood frames are manufactured in-house using kiln dried hardwood throughout (excludes footboard & wings) to ensure that our clients have a reliable and safe frame surrounding quality mechanisms. All wood supplied can be traced and is FSC controlled.
Mechanisms (a brief guide to the different types available) Mechanism/Action – this is the sub-frame/chassis that is attached within the underside of the chair where all the movement comes from, the type of sub-frame will determine what happens when the actuator (motor) pushes and/or pulls to enable the chair to perform its required tasks. The majority of our mechanisms used are manufactured within the UK (we support UK manufacturers) as we believe that this gives us more control for quality, reliability and supply of components. The specialist mechanisms aimed at the heavy-duty/bariatric sector of the market have been developed and produced in conjunction with a local precision engineering manufacturer. Single Motor 2-Way – The seat and back of this particular mechanism has a fixed angle that doesn’t change during the recline movement as the seat tilts with the back as the footrest is extending allowing the user to have full and total support (Tilt-in-Space) avoiding shearing of the back/hips. This mechanism is most suitable for users who have bad backs or similar ailments and enables the occupants to be tilted forwards or backwards in the chair whilst maintaining the position of the knees and hips achieving a resting position. By maintaining the angle between the chair seat & back at approximately 110 degrees, the occupant will not slide forward into an uncomfortable slumped position. By tilting the body into recline you allow for a distribution of weight over a larger contact area providing a simple and effective way to reduce pressure build-up. A normal seating position can cause poor circulation, raising the lower legs aids circulation. 3-Way –This particular mechanism has three movements as denoted by its title, the footrest elevates, the back will recline (breaking the seat/back angle) and the seat will tilt, this movement is staggered during its recline movement and can be controlled by the user to obtain a comfortable position to watch TV, read or take a nap. Wall-hugger – The Wall-hugger mechanism is very similar to the 3-Way, the footrest elevates, the back will recline and there the similarities end, as the next movement makes it the ideal system for the user who has limited space as the last movement of this mechanism is that the seat/arms of this chair will drop and roll forward as the chair starts to recline (conversely rolling backwards when returning to the sitting position) enabling it to require a back clearance of 4-5” away from the wall. This particular mechanism will allow the user to recline into a position that has the feet up and a slight recline in order that they can watch the TV or read a book/paper reducing the pressure on their lower legs assisting circulation. The full recline of this mechanism is not so pronounce as others although it will allow the occupant to have a restful nap. Two Motor Dual – The Dual mechanism has two motors that will independently drive the back and foot rest but will still bring the chair to a near standing position. The user has total control of the exact movement to the angle of recline on the backrest and the footrest i.e. the footrest can be elevated and the back remain in an upright position. Dual +VL (Vertical Lift) - This particular mechanism allows the user to have total independent movement of the foot & back as per a standard Dual Motor the difference with this particular chair is that it will only lift vertically which is the ideal solution for users who suffer with Muscular Dystrophy. There are two variations of the vertical lift High or Low depending on the user’s personal requirements. Dual + TIS (Tilt-in-space) – A dual motor mechanism offering the same benefits as the standard dual motor with the inclusion of an extra motor to enable the mechanism to offer a tilt-in-space position that will enable the user to raise their legs higher to simulate the high leg lift as per the 2-way. Three Motor (Heavy-Duty & Bariatric) Dual Heavy (CM.015) – This particular mechanism allows the user to independently control the movement of the back and foot as per a standard ‘Dual’ motor chair however, this chair is produced as a standard 35-stone rise/recline with a 25-stone foot lift (Oedemas) and can accommodate widths of 22” – 30” with a minimum seat height of 15.5”. Dual Bariatric - This particular mechanism is produced to withstand weights of up to 40-stone and continues to allow the user to independently control the movement of the back and foot as per a standard ‘Dual’ motor chair however, this chair is produced as a standard 40-stone rise/recline with a 25-stone foot lift (Oedemas) and can accommodate widths of 24” – 30” with a minimum seat height of 15.5”. NB. Both the above mechanisms come with a standard integrated Battery Back-up that is trickle charged for extra safety and user peace of mind. Four Motor (Bariatric) Bariatric – This mechanism has been designed and built to cope with weights of up to 70-stone plus and severe fluid retention, the rise/recline movement is controlled by individual motors with the seat lift having 2-motors that are synchronised to ensure user comfort and safety. This particular mechanism also has a control system to allow the back to go into recline mode whilst the chair is lifting (conversely when lowering the user into the seating position) the user to a near standing position, this function aids support for the user should they fall backwards or be unable to stand/move away from the chair when raised. Heavy-duty scissor mechanism installed (see Dimension). The chair has a built in Battery Back-up system as standard. Anti-entrapment available for additional accessory. Bespoke (special bariatric) – We have the ability to produce a mechanism to meet a specific need through our engineering partner along with our upholsterers. Should you have a requirement for such a chair then please feel free to contact us in order that we can discuss your clients’ requirements. All our specialist mechanisms have protected design and copyrights logged jointly and are not presently available to any other chair manufacturer. Other Mechanisms Manual recline mechanisms Recline only: 2-way – SW.20” only Variable Lift 2-Way* - with this particular mechanism the client (can be factory set) is able to alter the lift facility from its standard lift/tilt (position 1) 30 degree angle on tilt
